My Journey: From NHS Leadership to Professional Coaching
Two Decades of Transforming Workplace Culture
For 20 years, I had the privilege of working within the National Health Service across HR, communications, and change management. These roles weren't just positions—they were opportunities to make a genuine difference in how people experienced their working lives.
Creating Cultures Where People Thrive
Throughout my NHS career, I focused on developing initiatives that genuinely improved employee experience and transformed organisational culture. I understood that healthy, supported employees deliver better outcomes—for themselves, their colleagues, and the people they serve.
My work in workplace health and wellbeing encompassed both physical and mental health programmes. I recruited and supported mental health champions, introduced mindfulness sessions and a walking challenge, and facilitated information sessions on critical topics including mental health, stress management, and menopause support. These weren't box-ticking exercises; they were about creating environments where people felt valued and supported.
In 2019, this commitment to wellbeing was recognised when I was named Regional Champion for London in the Wellbeing at Work category of the NHS Parliamentary Awards.
Giving Employees a Voice
One of my proudest achievements was chairing a 'Ways of Working' group that brought together representatives from across the organisation. This initiative ensured that employees had a real voice in shaping their workplace culture and addressing areas that needed improvement.
During the Covid pandemic I led weekly engagement sessions with employees across the organisation which kept them connected with each other, supported to manage their health and wellbeing during such a challenging time and sometimes entertained!
Developing Teams and Leaders
I facilitated development events designed to help teams work together more effectively, manage demanding workloads, and increase performance. Beyond team development, I provided coaching and mentoring to individuals, helping them navigate challenges and unlock their potential.
Working alongside senior leaders, I supported them in developing clear organisational visions and values, understanding their roles and responsibilities, managing conflict constructively, and making informed decisions. I was a passionate advocate for compassionate leadership—a style that recognises the humanity in every interaction.
Championing Progressive Workplace Practices
Throughout my career in both the NHS and private sector, I championed flexible working arrangements and took a firm stand against bullying. I believed then, as I do now, that workplaces should be inclusive, respectful, and adaptable to people's needs.
I also designed strategies for engaging with the public, patients, and stakeholders, ensuring their views and experiences informed organisational decisions. This work reinforced my belief that listening is one of the most powerful tools we have.
Bringing Experience to My Coaching Practice
Every initiative I led, every team I supported, and every challenge I helped navigate has shaped who I am as a coach today. The knowledge and experience I gained throughout my NHS career directly informs my coaching practice at VHP Coaching.
I understand the pressures of demanding roles, the complexity of organisational change, and the profound impact that supportive leadership can have. Most importantly, I know that sustainable success comes from creating cultures where people feel heard, valued, and empowered to do their best work.
